When only three of the five veteran Mock Trial students got on the bus for their trip to the tournament at the 16th Circuit Court of Kane County, Coach Jon Keith soon learned that due to illness his team would face a big challenge during the kick off tournament for the 2008 season. With only a half hour bus trip to prepare, the team had to scramble and agree who would fill four key roles. Yet, after two rounds and five hours of intense competition against eleven other Illinois elite Mock Trial schools, Wheaton Academy emerged as a finalist.
The scrappy, undermanned legal Warriors from Wheaton put up a good fight in the final round against perennial powerhouse Hinsdale Central before taking home 2nd place. Having forgotten his tie, colorful and carefree senior Dom Sessa (Algonquin), was forced to borrow the coach’s as he filled in admirably by winning the first All-Tournament Witness Award of his three year career. The coach noted he even received a compliment from an opponent about his tie! Sophomore Ashley Pivaronas (Bartlett), showed she has quite a bright future by winning an All-Tournament Lawyer Award in her very first Mock Trial tournament.
Team Captain and senior Libby Baker (Wheaton) and veteran Heather Dede (Winfield) provided invaluable and strong leadership. Junior Kortney Moss (St. Charles), a newcomer to Mock Trial, and Amanda Steimle (St. Charles), the sole freshmen on the Varsity, both offered compelling testimony as key witnesses.
The Academy looks forward to having their team back at full strength as they prepare to compete in the Lake County Invitational, DuPage County and Northwest Suburban Tournaments each of the next three weekends before heading to Springfield for the March 1st Illinois State Championship.
