Despite defeating both opponents at the Northwest Suburban Invitational Tournament this past weekend, the legal Warriors from Wheaton Academy just missed placing in the Top Three for the first time all season. Coach Jon Keith commented, “I am really pleased that all of our performances this week were actually better than our last tournament.”
Captain Libby Baker (Wheaton) was once again commended for her strong performances on both direct and cross examinations. Seniors Heather Dede (Wheaton), Dom Sessa (Algonquin) and Kim Loewen (Naperville) filled pivotal roles. Sophomore Ashley Pivaronas (Bartlett) continued to provide persuasive opening statements and closing arguments. Twenty six teams battled it out before York, St. Charles East and Timothy Christian High Schools took the Top Three places respectively.
With different winners in each of the season tournaments to date, the State Championship Tournament in Springfield on February 29th and March 1st should be extremely competitive and unpredictable. After two days of intense team competition and a law examination by each team member, eight teams at the State Tournament will be named as finalists and given the opportunity to compete in one more round to determine the Champion and Top Three finishers.
The State Champion will move on and represent Illinois at the National Championship in Wilmington, VA in early May. Although Wheaton Academy received four All-State Awards at last year’s State Tournament, the team missed the final eight by one half of one percentage point. The legal Warriors from Wheaton look forward to their return visit to Springfield and another opportunity to compete for a State Championship.
Founded in 1853, Wheaton Academy is one of the nation’s oldest Christian high schools. A college preparatory school, it is accredited by the North Central Association of Colleges and Secondary Schools and recognized by the state of Illinois and the DuPage County Education Service Region. Wheaton Academy is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International.
