Happy Arbor Day! And happy Earth Day! That upstart holiday was founded 99 years after Arbor Day, but has really made a name for itself. Tree planting has always been a simple act that anyone - pre-schoolers to seniors - can do to show they care about the Earth.
Many communities have launched an Earth Day event this year and they have proved popular and successful. I think the notion of stewardship of the earth is finally catching on.
The Morton Arboretum has a special connection to Arbor Day. J. Sterling Morton founded the holiday and his boy, Joy, founded the Morton Arboretum. We love to see the idea flourish.
Though we couldn't reach all of you to learn about your plans, we counted 80 communities celebrating Arbor Day with 19,000 kids, planting 7000 trees with 132 schools. Please see the summary on our website to see if you were included and we got the information right. http://www.mortonarb.org/main.taf?p=3,4,3
I'd love to know how your event turns out. And I'm always collecting clever Arbor Day ideas to share. Please send me an email emakra@mortonarb.org with the number of participants, trees planted, any special success and photos, once the event is over and the mulch settles.
As you finalize your plans for Arbor Day you may be looking for one more quote about trees, the perfect activity for the 6th graders, or some of those impressive figures on the benefits of trees. We have them here for you on our website. http://www.mortonarb.org/main.taf?p=3,4,3
We also may have a few of our Arbor Day activity booklets left for you to share with kids (5th grade and younger) at your celebrations. Give a call or send an email with the details and we can try to accommodate. It is also posted on the website for your convenience.
Have a wonderful Arbor Day. And of course, plant trees!
