Senator says new budget approval threshold should lead to better product ... June 1, 2007/pk
SPRINGFIELD, IL— The Illinois legislature’s May 31 adjournment date has come and gone without a state budget, but State Senator John J. Millner (R- Carol Stream) says the stalemate may provide an opportunity for an overall better budget for Illinois citizens.
“Whenever there has been a bipartisan budget in Illinois, it has usually led to more responsible spending and an overall better product for Illinois citizens,” Millner said. “I think overtime provides legislators from both sides of the aisle a unique opportunity to craft a responsible budget that puts people first, keeps our promises and is fiscally solid.”
Millner says, while Democrats control both chambers of the legislature, Republicans will now be needed to pass a budget plan due to the rules concerning the passage of legislation after May 31.
Millner says any budget deal must be based some simple criteria including- meeting the state’s current financial obligations, having the state live within its means, and pursuing policies that help create jobs and spur economic development, among other measures.
