House Bill 3454, which received final approval on August 14, adds a block of instruction that is aimed at identifying and interacting with persons with autism and other developmental disabilities to the curriculum of police officers attending certified schools.
The instructions are aimed at reducing barriers to reporting crimes against persons with autism and aid in the handling of cases where an autistic person, or person with a developmental disability, is a victim of, or witness to, a crime.
“Law enforcement officials are asked to respond to difficult situations every single day, and we need to ensure they are prepared for anything that may arise,” said Millner, a former police chief and primary sponsor of the bill. “Moving forward, this law gives all new police officers the tools necessary to successfully handle cases where an autistic or developmentally disabled person is involved. I am pleased this legislation had the full support of the legislature and the governor.”
House Bill 3454 goes into effect on January 1, 2008.
