CHS Students Make Headway in Raising Funds to
Build School in Angola

One way that Community High School's Community Leadership class is making progress toward its goal of raising $10,000 to build a school in Angola is by getting other students involved in the drive. CHS foreign language classes, in partnership with International Club, recently raised $1,100 through a change drive competition. The total included a matching amount from teachers including Terry Mitchell Strohm, Marjorie Appel, Sarah Bellis, Zerrin Bulut, June Lincoln, Janelle Stefancic, Karin Sammons, Elizabeth Malinsky, and Sue Junkroski. The winning class received baked good prepared by members of the International Club. Appel and Bellis are faculty sponsors of International Club.

The change drive took shape after Community Leadership students made a series of presentations to other classes in an effort to inspire other students to get involved with the We-Go 2 Africa project. Other Community Leadership students volunteered their time during lunch periods to sell We-Go 2 Africa tee shirts that had been designed by the class. Currently the class has raised $900 on tee shirt sales.

Community Leadership class instructor Mary Ellen Daneels hopes to go to Angola this summer to help build the school, along with a team of adults affiliated with RISE International, the sponsoring organization. Thirty schools have been constructed to date, providing access to education for more than 14,750 Angolan children. The hope is that these children will turn their country around after its 27-year civil war, which left the country in ruins.

For more information on how you can help, or to schedule a student presentation to your group or organization, please call Mary Ellen Daneels at 630.876-6453 or email her at mdaneels@d94.org.
