Chicago Police Department
receives mini-grant alcohol program
WEST CHICAGO, ILLINOIS, DECEMBER 23, 2005 – Officers of the West Chicago Police Department will be enforcing traffic laws such as DUI, speeding and seat belt violations. The enforcement period for the mini-grant alcohol program is from December 19, 2005 through January 1, 2006.
According to Illinois Department of Transportation, 1,356 people died on Illinois roadways in 2004 as compared to 1,454 in 2003. With the holiday season upon us, our police department is faced with one of the most challenging times of the year which is to keep impaired drivers off the roads. Approximately 45% of fatalities that occur on Illinois roadways are alcohol related. During the holiday season, people are more inclined to consume alcohol than at other times of the year.
The West Chicago Police Department will focus their attention on removing impaired drivers from our roadways and taking a zero tolerance approach to enforcing our passenger restraint laws.
"If you plan to drink, have a designated driver appointed and remember to buckle up," said Deputy Chief James Mazurek. "The West Chicago Police Department wants everyone to be safe over this holiday season and to enjoy the spirit of the holidays. The best way to start the new year is to be alive to enjoy it."
