Ramey Bill to Include Pets in State Emergency Plans Passes House
Springfield,
IL…A bill co-sponsored by State Rep. Randy Ramey (R-Carol Stream) to protect
household pets in the event of a major emergency passed the House.
"We saw what happened when Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and all those pets were left by themselves to starve to death," Ramey said. "I wanted to make sure that when we discuss emergency plans for this state, we include pets in the equation. Animals shouldn't be left to die." House Bill 4804 requires that any emergency operations plan of the state will take into account the needs of those individuals with household pets and service animals following a major disaster or emergency.
"Obviously, saving human life is the top priority but we should make sure we
attempt to save animals in the process if possible," Ramey said.
