Teachers “Sumo” to Raise Money for Angolan School
The Community Leadership class at West Chicago Community High School is raising money for We-Go 2 Africa, a project to build a school in Angola, Africa. We-Go 2 Africa’s mission is to “provide Angola with an opportunity for a better life through education that will address literacy and healthcare issues, as well as provide an atmosphere for their democracy to thrive.” On February 27th, teachers and staff will participate in a Sumo Wrestling tournament to help We-Go 2 Africa reach its goal of $10,000. Students voted on the teachers they’d like to see wrestle by donating money to that teacher’s fund. The top sixteen teachers with the most amount of money will face off in a wrestling tournament in which sumo suits will be worn.
Teachers participating in the event include Jaime Garcia, William Vega, Corrie Steiglitz, David Exner, Anthony LaRue, Elizabeth Malinsky, Steve Govertson, Brandon Fantozzi, Whitney Snyder, Jake Martin, Brian Turnbaugh, Katie Jones, Candace Fikis, Jason Kling, Patti Kozlowski and Principal John Highland.
The Community Leadership instructor, Mary Ellen Daneels, states, “The WeGo 2 Africa project is not only building a school for community in rural Angola, but building a sense of community in our own school as students and staff work together to accomplish our goal.”
Audience members are encouraged to bring a new school supply to the event to be sent to the students of the Angolan school. EF Educational Tours donated 100 backpacks to the WeGo 2 Africa Project. Maggie Haas’ Geography classes are collecting supplies to put into the backpacks and funds to ship the school supplies to Angola. Those who bring school supplies can win of over 40 raffle prizes donated by local businesses such as: Odoba Grill, Bowling Green. St. Andrew’s Golf Course, Subway, Best Buy, Cardinal Fitness, Baker’s Square, iTunes, Family Video, Red Lobster, King James BBQ, On the Border, Olive Garden, Buffalo Wild Wings, Go Roma, and Santo Maria’s
