West Chicago Police Reinforce Driver Safety

West Chicago, Illinois: October 30, 2006 - The West Chicago Police Department has announced that it has received a new $60,750 mini-grant for speed enforcement for the calendar year 2006/2007.

Motor vehicle crashes are the leading cause of death for Americans from the ages of 5 through 24. In Illinois, as nationally, these preventable deaths and injuries are very costly. Most recent economic loss studies for alcohol-related crashes in Illinois total $1.6 billion annually.

The primary purpose of the mini-grant speed enforcement program (SEP) is to reduce speed related traffic crashes and the resulting injuries and fatalities through high visibility, increased enforcement of speed and impaired driving laws, with the focus on state and national mobilizations.

The objectives are to reduce speed related injury crashes, reduce fatal crashes, and reduce all injury crashes. West Chicago Police Officers will be out enforcing traffic laws during the up-coming months.

According to Deputy Chief Jim Mazurek, "The West Chicago Police Department is starting with the up-coming holiday season because it wants every driver and passenger to arrive at their destinations safe and sound. You owe it to your family and friends. The holiday season is a time for happiness, sharing, and joy - not sadness."

Deputy Chief Mazurek also reminds all drivers and passengers, "Buckle up, because your life depends on it." Additionally, people who transport their pets while traveling and visiting should have a special harness to protect their animal from serious injury in a traffic crash.
